The Art of Subtlety
Transforming Hosting Night Without Trying Too Hard
Ever get stuck with the daunting task of hosting a night for family or friends? Hosting feels like a never-ending list of tasks, including grocery shopping, cleaning, and cooking. And for a special occasion, that feels like the bare minimum. Holidays have a designated checklist at hand – Christmas has the décor, 4th of July has the barbecue, and Holi has its colors, which sets the tone for the host. But when the checklist is blank, how does one add a certain je ne sais quoi to the ambience? How does one put in their own flair without going out of the way?
Thoughtful Music, not sound – Music always sets the tone for a successful evening. Think of the people you are hosting, their likes and dislikes. Is there a type of music you enjoy as a group? The goal is always to play thoughtful music, and not just loud music (unless it’s DJ night, duh!) Think instrumental & jazz, the goal is atmosphere, not soundtrack.
Layered, low lighting – Was there ever a person who relaxed under a bright, hospital light? Nope. Swap the overhead lights for table lamps and wall sconces. Warm bulbs instantly soften a room and make your guests feel at home. Candles and string lights always add to the warmth.
Lightly Scented – When done right, nothing hits a hosting home run like a scent does. A scent can make or break an evening. Just like a good scent can make a space feel pristine, a bad scent can make a clean space feel unsanitary. So, light a few candles around the home, put out some diffusers, or leave some fresh herbs simmering on the stove.
A good way to think about your hosting experience is by walking the space like a guest would. The little things add to the experience: a place to put down your coat, a welcome drink, or enough water jugs around the room. All things said and done, your guests won’t enjoy themselves unless you are. So, relax and enjoy!!
